The French Alps offer incredible weather diversity and looks, offering unique opportunities for elopements throughout the year. Winter elopements (December-March) offer snow-covered landscapes and cozy fireside celebrations, while summer ceremonies (June-September) feature wildflower meadows and crystal-clear mountain lakes.
Winter Season (December-March): -10°C to 3°C (14-37°F)
The winter season in the French Alps is ideal for skiiers, snowboarders, and other winter lovers. In this time you can expect shorter daylight hours (8-9 hours) with clear, crisp days alternate with snowfall, especially above 1,500 meters of altitude.
Spring Season (April-May): 5-15°C (41-59°F)
This is a magical time in the Alps, with lower altitude snow melting and creating mesmerizing waterfalls while the alpine flowers begin blooming, creating a spectacular experience for lovers. During this time you can expect the occasional rain shower. This season is not very touristy, so you can expect reduced accommodation costs.
Summer Season (June-September): 15-25°C (59-77°F)
Summer in the French Alps is spectacular and full of activities with long daylight hours (up to 15 hours). You can expect the clearest mountain views in early morning, while in the afternoon you might experience a thunderstorm or two. July is also the peak wildflower season, making nature picture-perfect for outdoor ceremonies.
Autumn Season (October-November): 5-15°C (41-59°F)
The autumn weather in the French Alps can be quite unpredictable with variable weather conditions. If you like the idea of changing leaves, consider eloping in October, when you’ll be able to marvel at the golden larch trees. Snowfall is possible at higher altitudes, but generally speaking, this is a quieter period with good value.
Altitude Considerations:
The temperature drops roughly 1°C per 100m elevation gain.
Keep in mind that the mountain weather can change rapidly with big temperature drops in the evening.
Valley locations are more sheltered and stable than those above 2000m which tend to be significantly colder.
